Gun Owners of CA Announces Legislator Scorecard Changes for 2018

It’s already July 2017 and although some still haven’t come to grips with what happened last November, the 2018 election season is just a few months away.  It’s time to take a big, deep breath.

Gun Owners has fully embraced the political shift in Washington DC, but we have a lot of work to do on the West Coast.  We’ve been hard at it, devising new strategies for 2018, some of which may be surprising and even a bit painful for politicians whose support of the 2nd Amendment has been….”less than…”

In a letter to sitting members of the Legislature, GOC just announced “well in advance of the next election season” that there would be changes in how grades for the legislative scorecard will be calculated.

Why the change?

Each election cycle, GOCCC (Gun Owners of California Campaign Committee) fields countless requests for endorsements from legislators and candidates who voice their enthusiastic and fiery commitment to the 2nd Amendment.  We then publish a scorecard for both:  candidates are graded based upon answers to a detailed questionnaire and the incumbent’s grade is determined exclusively by their recorded votes.   There are a decent number of legislators who have solid voting records, but the bottom line is there are very few who are willing to stand with us when the going gets tough – and that is precisely when we need support the most.

We are sick and tired of hearing other issues are more important. To hint the 2nd Amendment is not as important as transportation infrastructure is like saying New Jersey has more going on than Hawaii.

That’s why we think the time has come to call attention to those who go above and beyond casting a vote for or against a bill – and those who don’t.

Thus, beginning in 2018, an “A” grade will be limited to those members who either introduce pro-2nd Amendment legislation and/or vocally stand out in that regard.  “B+” grades will be given to those who maintain a solid pro-gun voting record.

To the legislators who aren’t just bystanders and instead call the majority out on their lies – THANK YOU! THANK YOU for asking us what you can do to help.  THANK YOU for using our prepped research and talking points so you can be equipped with good stats in order to have a thoughtful and educated debate.

Politically correct garbage has polluted what Californians hear in the media especially when it comes to guns, and we say THANK YOU when our elected officials stand against the slurs aimed at us during testimony at the Capitol. It happens more than people realize – we (and our 2nd Amendment partners) have endured ugly personal attacks from anti-gun members, and we are frustrated when our friends remain silent, offering little to no support, and asking no questions of us.  We lose a valuable opportunity to respond to the verbal assaults when this happens.  We wonder why there’s no desire to understand, let alone use legislative and political strategy.  Politics is messy – for those timid souls who don’t want to get their hair mussed, they are in the wrong line of work.

Our new policy will likely annoy some members, but given the leftist structure of the legislature, there is no room for the politically lukewarm.  The 2nd Amendment is as important as when our nation was founded – in fact, it guarantees the First Amendment and every amendment that follows, and we at Gun Owners of California will never just “go along to get along.”

We have already received a lot of positive support so let us know what you think about these changes.

I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live by the light that I have. I must stand with anybody that stands right, and stand with him while he is right, and part with him when he goes wrong.
